8 New Ideas for Dev Interrupted Season 3

We had an incredible year at Dev Interrupted - from breaking into Apple's Top 100 tech pods for the first time - to seeing 440% growth in our Spotify Wrapped streams and recording our first in-person podcasts at IT Revolution’s DevOps Enterprise Summit.

We brought our Dev Interrupted Dome to DevOps Enterprise Summit - this interview with Instana’s Dev Advocate Josh Lee will be published in 2023

With a successful Season 2 behind us, we're dreaming big for Season 3 which kicks off January 3rd.

8 Ideas to grow our podcast in year 3

More expert panels

Dev Interrupted has traditionally been in-depth 1:1 interviews with top engineering leaders—and we're going to keep doing that. But Season 2 saw superb panels that both our YouTube & pod audiences loved. We've got more ideas 👀

Bring back audience favorites

Charity Majors and Netflix’s Kathryn Koehler were among our top 'returners' from Season 1 - and we want to bring back more of our top guests to update conversations, dive into new topics, or join us for expert panels. What might bringing @DevInterrupted Season 2 favs back next year look like?

  1. 💡Maybe Kelly Vaughn would come back to talk about trends & news in DX

  2. 💡Perhaps we can get Lena Reinhard to do a live coaching session with a junior eng from our community

  3. 💡Or a panel convo about PRs and how to handle them with Rouan Wilsenach

Expand the conversation

We had our first VC on Dev Interrupted Season 2 with Jason Warner of Redpoint Ventures and we want more related experts.

  • What if we got 3 expert venture capitalists together for a a panel on the state of SaaS markets and how engineering leaders can navigate 2023-4?

More inventors & thought leaders

Some of my favorite conversations on the show this year were with people like Rouan and Kubernetes co-founder Brendan Burns about new ideas and how they've built new software and ideas. We want to talk to more people who have invented something new in software engineering—people like Zhamak Dehghani of Data Mesh fame or Gayathri Mohan author of full-stack testing.

Your podcast saw a lot of gains this year is shown at the top with stats from Spotify below: up 544% in hours, 440% in streams, 388% in listeners, 359% in followers

📊Double down on distribution

Dev Interrupted’s 440% growth this year was driven by big hits that went viral in places like Reddit. However, we can do more to open the show up in Season 3 - we're just scratching the surface with YouTube, our community, and our blogs about the pod.

One area, in particular, we're going to grow? We started a Substack to complement our weekly interruption email list that Jonathan Sandals writes. We'll definitely be continuing to grow this channel in Season 3 and looking to write more content based on each episode.

More in-person events

The community response to our Dev Interrupted Dome recordings at IT Revolution’s DevOps enterprise summit was fantastic, and the content has turned out great. We’re planning to do 3-4 such roadshows in 2023. If you’ve got suggestions of events where we should do a recording, you can tweet me and let me know. We’d love to hear from you.

Interact

Our digital Interact events became a crucial component of our community in 2022, with more than 2000 attendees from 94 different countries. We're exploring plans for an in-person conference in late 2023 or early 2024 and plan to continue our digital experiences throughout 2023.

Aim high

We’re honored by the top leaders who joined us on Dev Interrupted Season 2 in 2022—people like Sarvenaz Myslicki, VP of Technology at American Express, James Stanier accomplished author and Director of Engineering at Shopify, Maria Gutierrez VP of Engineering at Twitter and many more - including upcoming guests in Season 3 such as Google’s Forrest Brazeal.

Between that and our amazing audience pushing us into Apple and Spotify’s Top 100 US Technology podcasts for the first time in December, we’ve been inspired to chase down big names for Season 3. You’ll hear from leaders at storied companies like IBM—but we also want to go after folks like acclaimed angel investor Jason Calacanis to talk about navigating down markets and Amazon CTO Werner Vogels. If you’ve got suggestions for incredible guests—as always, you can reach out to me via Twitter or LinkedIn.

I hope you'll join Dan Lines and me in 2023 for Dev Interrupted Season 3 as we implement the 8 ideas above & make the podcast and community better than ever. We'll see you January 3rd - until then, happy holidays from the whole team at LinearB.
